Electrolyser firms blow a fuse


Europe’s largest electrolyser manufacturers are losing patience with policymakers as sluggish growth in the green hydrogen sector undermines their decision to expand production capacity

Europe’s electrolyser manufacturers are in a tight spot. Urged on by policymakers, they have built out their production capacity aggressively in recent years to meet what was supposed to be a surge in demand from new green hydrogen projects across the EU through 2030.
They also went looking for sites in the US to house new production facilities, as the generous support originally offered to green hydrogen projects under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) looked set to power up demand for electrolysers.
Fast forward to 2026 and the market looks very different. Growth in Europe has failed to materialise on the scale once expected as projects struggle to secure offtakers at current green hydroge
