Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport has allocated €70 million (approximately $81 million) to a programme designed to speed up the adoption of zero- and low-emission technologies in inland shipping. The initiative, named the Directive on Grants for Green Inland Navigation, is open to companies, municipalities, and other interested parties based in Germany, with applications opening on 17 August.

Funding Scope

The financial support is intended to facilitate the conversion of existing cargo vessels to emission-free or low-emission propulsion systems. Additionally, the programme covers the construction of renewable electricity and renewable hydrogen production plants, along with their associated storage solutions.

Infrastructure Investments

Port infrastructure is also a key focus, with funding available for charging facilities and bunkering infrastructure for alternative fuels, including hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol.

Application Timeline

The deadline for applications has not yet been specified. Federal Minister of Transport Steffen Bilger has stated that inland navigation is an efficient and climate-friendly mode of transport with considerable future potential, and that the new funding programme is designed to accelerate the deployment of emission-free propulsion systems and the necessary charging and refuelling infrastructure.
