Dubai’s DEWA records 100-ton milestone in green hydrogen production

Developed in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, the facility produces approximately 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has announced a major milestone for the authority’s Green Hydrogen project, which has now produced more than 100 tons of green hydrogen since its launch in May 2021.

Most of this hydrogen has been used to generate over 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity using a hydrogen gas engine, which has contributed to the abatement of more than 515 tons of carbon dioxide.

Fueling the future: ENOC partnership

In addition to power generation, over 11 tons of the green hydrogen were shipped to ENOC (Emirates National Oil Company). This supply has been instrumental in fueling hydrogen vehicles at ENOC’s Service Station of the Future at Expo 2020 Dubai, as well as powering other industrial applications.

Global competitiveness and regional leadership

Al Tayer emphasized the strategic significance of the project in enhancing the UAE and Dubai’s global position in the clean energy sector.

According to the Green Hydrogen Report 2024 by Alvarez & Marsal, the UAE ranks first globally in green hydrogen competitiveness; an accomplishment reinforced by the success of DEWA’s initiative.

First-of-its-kind in MENA region

The DEWA Green Hydrogen project is the first of its kind in the MENA region to produce green hydrogen using solar energy.

Developed in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, the facility produces approximately 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour.

The project includes a gas tank capable of storing up to 12 hours worth of hydrogen production. The stored hydrogen enables nighttime power generation through a hydrogen gas motor with a capacity of around 300 kilowatts of electrical energy.

“The Green Hydrogen Project supports the forward-looking vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to consolidate the competitive advantages of the UAE in the field of hydrogen.

“The project enhances DEWA’s efforts to support the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100 percent of the energy production capacity from clean sources by 2050.

“It also supports the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which aims to stimulate the use of sustainable transport in line with the emirate’s strategic objectives to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Al Tayer.

Built for the future of clean energy

Designed with scalability and integration in mind, the Green Hydrogen Project has been constructed to support a wide range of future hydrogen applications across the energy, transport, and industrial sectors.

As hydrogen continues to gain global momentum as a sustainable energy source, DEWA’s pioneering efforts fortify the UAE’s commitment to energy diversification, sustainability, and innovation, paving the way for a greener, more resilient future.
