Milestone reinforces Dubai’s role as a regional leader in clean energy and hydrogen innovation.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that its Green Hydrogen project has produced more than 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since beginning operations in May 2021.
The majority of this output was converted into over 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity through a hydrogen gas engine, preventing more than 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, more than 11 tonnes were supplied to ENOC for fueling hydrogen vehicles at its Service Station of the Future at Expo 2020 Dubai and for other industrial uses.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, said the achievement aligns with the UAE’s long-term sustainability goals. “The project enhances DEWA’s efforts to support the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of the energy production capacity from clean sources by 2050,” Al Tayer said.
The UAE currently ranks first in green hydrogen competitiveness, according to the Green Hydrogen Report 2024 by Alvarez & Marsal.
As the first initiative of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, DEWA’s project produces hydrogen from solar energy in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy. It can generate approximately 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, with on-site storage capacity equivalent to 12 hours of production.
Built with scalability in mind, the facility is designed to accommodate future hydrogen applications across the energy, transportation, and industrial sectors, further reinforcing Dubai’s commitment to sustainable development and innovation in clean energy.
