Clyde Hydrogen Systems, a Scottish clean energy technology company, has completed the build of its first fully integrated prototype system, marking a major technical and commercial milestone for the business and a significant step forward for the green hydrogen sector.

The new system validates Clyde Hydrogen’s decoupled electrolysis technology, which is designed to make hydrogen production safer, simpler and more cost effective than conventional electrolysers. The process separates hydrogen generation from oxygen production, allowing hydrogen to be stored in a non-gaseous form while operating directly from renewable electricity sources. This approach addresses long standing challenges around safety, cost and long term energy storage.

The company achieved a key breakthrough last year when it successfully produced high pressure hydrogen using its decoupled electrolysis process. The completion of the integrated prototype now allows Clyde Hydrogen to move beyond laboratory validation and focus on scaling up towards a commercial demonstrator. The first market ready product is targeted for release in 2028.

Clyde Hydrogen is a spin out from the University of Glasgow School of Chemistry, which is internationally recognised for its leadership in electrochemistry research. The company believes its technology can redefine the architecture of future green hydrogen systems, particularly for regions seeking dependable renewable energy storage solutions, including emerging African energy markets.

To support its next phase of growth, Clyde Hydrogen is seeking up to £5m in seed funding, with the round expected to close by the end of Q2. The funding will be used to develop the first commercial product and expand the company’s technical and commercial team.

The business is backed by pre seed funding from Zinc, the University of Glasgow and Ecotricity, alongside grant support from the Scottish Government Hydrogen Innovation Scheme and the Net Zero Technology Centre. In 2025, Clyde Hydrogen also signed a memorandum of understanding with Hebrides based green hydrogen producer PlusZero to demonstrate the technology outside of a laboratory environment for the first time.
