China Hydrogen Energy Report 2026: 15th Five-Year Plan Goals – News and Statistics

China Hydrogen Energy Report 2026: 15th Five-Year Plan Goals – News and Statistics

Oct 2, 2026

China is positioned as the global leader in hydrogen energy production and consumption, with renewable hydrogen capacity exceeding half of the worldwide total, according to an industry report cited by Hydrogen Central. The China Hydrogen Energy Development Report (2026), issued by the National Energy Administration, indicates that the country’s full hydrogen value chain, covering production, storage, transportation and application, saw rapid growth in 2025.

Operational renewable hydrogen capacity climbed past 250,000 metric tons per year, more than doubling compared with the prior year. Infrastructure has been expanding alongside production. As of June 2026, China had built roughly 620 hydrogen refueling stations and brought more than 350 kilometers of pure hydrogen pipelines into service.

The report points to independent advances in technology and equipment across several segments, together with faster development paths for green ammonia and green methanol, as factors raising the sector’s global influence. For the 15th Five-Year Plan period spanning 2026 to 2030, the country is aiming for significant progress in industrial scale and commercial application scenarios.

Annual green hydrogen demand is projected to fall between 2.4 million and 4.3 million tons over that period, while the total output value of the entire industrial chain is expected to surpass 1 trillion yuan, equivalent to about 139 billion dollars. Over the next five years, hydrogen is expected to become deeply integrated into the country’s broader economic and social development, generating large-scale effects in areas including industrial decarbonization and the green transition of transportation.

Priority is to be given to comprehensive regional development of hydrogen, the smooth connection of storage and transport infrastructure, and the deep embedding of hydrogen into the national new energy system, according to the report.
