Canada’s Charbone is expanding capacity at its flagship green hydrogen facility in Quebec, having received a second electrolyser at the site that began operations in December 2025.
The new system will bump capacity at the firm’s Sorel-Tracy plant up to 4.75MW, joining an operational 2.25MW Cummins-made alkaline electrolyser.
With the project currently producing 328 tonnes of hydrogen per year fuelled by hydroelectric grid power, the new electrolyser could bring the output up to 694 tonnes.
Charbone has not confirmed the manufacturer of the new unit.
The company said it “remains on track” to begin operating the new system by Autumn this year. The site could eventually be expanded up to 25.65MW.
Scaling up will rely on government approvals expanding on current environmental permits limiting development to 5MW.
The company, which announced first on-site progress of Phase 1B in July, intends to grow its distribution network across eastern Canada and the US Midwest. It has plans for projects in Michigan and Wisconsin.
It has been supplying green hydrogen produced at the site to merchant end-users, as well as fuel cell power applications, across the region.
The project comes as its first operational plant in a series of many, which would also see it branch out beyond hydrogen to other industrial gases like oxygen and helium.
