BMW receives €270 million in funding for hydrogen propulsion
BMW is the only German manufacturer relying on hydrogen as a drive technology. The government is providing more than €270 million in funding for this. However, the technology still has to overcome several hurdles.
The German federal government and the state of Bavaria are funding a hydrogen project by automaker BMW. The goal is the development of a fuel cell electric powertrain. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) and Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder (CSU) presented the automaker with a grant of approximately €273 million for the “HyPowerDrive” project in Berlin.
The federal government will contribute approximately €191 million, and Bavaria around €82 million, the ministry announced. The fuel cell cars are expected to be launched on the market from 2028.
