The Hydrogen Technology User Centre (WTAZ) has been launched in Pfeffenhausen, Bavaria. According to a report from Hydrogen Central, the project is being realized by the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) together with HyTACC, HyTACC CRYO, the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg, Landshut University of Applied Sciences, the municipal company H2LA, and the Free State of Bavaria. Its aim is to establish an internationally visible infrastructure for developing and testing hydrogen-based mobility technologies.
Project Details and Funding
Federal funding of 54 million euros from federal funds and a European development programme forms the basis for the centre. Approximately 32 million euros of this will go toward the scientific infrastructure of the participating universities. The funding decisions were handed over by Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder, Minister President Markus Söder, and State Minister Hubert Aiwanger.
Minister Schnieder stated that Germany is an international leader in hydrogen technology and that the centre provides an efficient innovation space to move the technology from research to application. Minister President Söder described the project as a strong signal for future mobility that strengthens Bavaria’s energy and research strategy. Minister Aiwanger noted the funding allows for the setup of basic infrastructure and testing facilities, which will benefit small and medium-sized companies during the transformation toward green hydrogen mobility.
Research Roles and Infrastructure
Within the alliance, THI is taking a leading role by building a complete vehicle test bench for hydrogen-based commercial vehicles, featuring a climate chamber and simulators. The Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg is constructing a test stand for H2 combustion engines, while Landshut University of Applied Sciences is building a thermal test stand for hydrogen storage systems. HyTACC CRYO is planning a direct liquefier for producing green liquid hydrogen, and H2LA is developing the site infrastructure.
A joint test hall with outdoor areas will be available for all partners, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups. An existing electrolyser at the site will supply green hydrogen, creating a fully sustainable test infrastructure. Professor Hans-Joachim Hof of THI said the funding strengthens their research centre and expands its profile with the forward-looking topic of hydrogen for commercial vehicles.
The high-performance research hub is part of the National Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Centre and is planned for commissioning by the end of 2027.
