The international technology group Andritz has inaugurated a state-of-the-art gigafactory for electrolysers in Erfurt, Germany. The facility, which can produce up to 1.1 GW or approximately 160-200 electrolysers annually, is set to bolster the burgeoning green hydrogen market across Europe. Source.
Since March, the Erfurt plant has been manufacturing key components essential for green hydrogen production. The production capacity is designed to be flexible, allowing for adjustments based on customer demand. The electrolysers incorporate cutting-edge technology from Andritz’s partner, HydrogenPro, and the initial units are earmarked for Salzgitter AG’s pioneering 100 MW hydrogen facility aimed at low-carbon steel production.
Joachim Schonbeck, CEO of Andritz, emphasized the company’s commitment to aiding customers in their green transition and advancing its objective of becoming a leading provider of innovative, cost-effective solutions in Erfurt. Gerd Baresch, Chief Technical Officer at Salzgitter Flachstahl, highlighted the strategic importance of Andritz in their journey towards low-CO2 steel production, noting that the 100 MW electrolysis plant will enable Salzgitter to self-produce hydrogen, thereby supporting the production of environmentally friendly products at their site.
Meanwhile, the global electrolyser market continues to expand, with data from IndexBox indicating a rising demand driven by the transition to renewable energy sources. Last spring, Australian mining company Fortescue also announced the opening of an electrolyser manufacturing plant in Gladstone, Queensland, with an expected production capacity exceeding 2 GW of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers annually.
