All seven 5 MW modules of the second green hydrogen electrolyser have arrived at OMV Petrom’s Petrobrazi refinery. Together with the previously announced 20 MW unit, the refinery’s hydrogen capacity will reach 55 MW.
The integration of the new modules, supplied by German Neuman & Esser, is currently underway. Kraftanlagen Romania is carrying out the construction, logistics, component manufacturing and module assembly.
The 35 MW unit is receiving 29 million euros in non-reimbursable funding through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Once operational, it will produce approximately 4,700 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
The two electrolysers combined could produce around 8,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year, which will be used in refining processes, including sustainable SAF and HVO production. These fuels are produced from vegetable and waste oils and can reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65 per cent over their entire life cycle, while remaining compatible with existing infrastructure, the company said.
