Hy2gen Nordic AS, a subsidiary of the global renewable hydrogen producer Hy2gen AG headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, revealed on Wednesday that its Albatros renewable hydrogen initiative has been chosen for backing through the European Hydrogen Bank, an EU funding mechanism for the hydrogen sector. According to the company, this endorsement acknowledges the project’s possible role in advancing Europe’s energy shift, cutting industrial carbon emissions, and fostering the renewable hydrogen economy.
Project Details and Location
Situated in Kasso, Denmark, the venture will involve a planned 100 MW electrolysis plant generating RFNBO-certified hydrogen for industrial clients in Germany and across Europe. Over a decade, Albatros is anticipated to yield roughly 144,000 metric tons of renewable hydrogen, preventing an estimated 986,000 metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions while aiding the decarbonization of challenging industrial sectors.
European Hydrogen Bank Support
The initiative was picked via the European Hydrogen Bank’s competitive bidding process, offering a price of EUR0.97 per kilogram of renewable hydrogen output. The Bank aids renewable hydrogen projects by granting a production-linked subsidy, determined through a competitive auction where participants propose the smallest per-kilogram premium required to render their project economically feasible. Albatros obtained a premium of EUR0.97 per kilogram for its initial ten years of operation, noted as one of the most aggressive bids in the present auction cycle. This subsidy will assist in closing the price disparity between renewable hydrogen and traditional options, facilitating Europe’s move toward a low-carbon industrial landscape.
Strategic Infrastructure
Positioned in one of Denmark’s premier renewable energy zones, Albatros will link to the Danish-German Hydrogen Backbone, allowing effective delivery of renewable hydrogen to industrial hubs in Germany and the wider European hydrogen grid. This cross-border setup also fulfills a wider strategic aim: by forging a direct connection between Danish renewable energy assets and European industrial needs, Albatros bolsters Europe’s energy autonomy and cuts reliance on fossil fuel imports—a key goal of the EU’s energy security strategy.

Hege Okland, Managing Director of Hy2gen Nordic AS, stated that Albatros is the appropriate venture to meet the rising need for renewable hydrogen in Germany. She highlighted that with Aabenraa functioning as a contemporary industrial center and backing from the European Hydrogen Bank, the firm can supply renewable hydrogen to German industrial clients at minimal costs, assisting them in fulfilling EU renewable hydrogen requirements. Okland expressed pride in investing and collaborating with Aabenraa Municipality, supporting local economic growth, and aiming to become a lasting partner in the Kasso area while advancing its status as a green industry hub.
Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen AG, remarked that as Europe works to decarbonize its industrial foundation and enhance energy resilience, initiatives like Albatros will grow in importance. He noted that by connecting Danish renewable energy with European industrial demand, Albatros broadens Hy2gen’s portfolio and underscores the company’s dedication to supplying the renewable molecules essential for the energy transition.
Employment and Timeline
Albatros is projected to generate up to 500 jobs during building phases and roughly 30 to 40 permanent operational roles, along with prospects for local vendors, contractors, and service firms. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2028, with operations starting in 2031. Over the next months, Hy2gen will advance technical development, permitting processes, and maintain discussions with the municipality and local stakeholders.
