In a major development for India’s clean energy sector, the Adani Group has successfully operationalised the country’s first off-grid 5 megawatt green hydrogen plant in the Kutch district of Gujarat. Built by Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), the clean energy arm of Adani Enterprises, the facility signifies a critical advancement in decentralised, renewable-powered hydrogen production.
The pilot project runs entirely on solar power and incorporates a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), ensuring continuous off-grid operation. This fully automated, closed-loop electrolyser system dynamically adjusts to real-time renewable energy input, enhancing both its operational flexibility and reliability. The integration of BESS also allows the plant to efficiently handle the intermittency of solar energy while maintaining consistent hydrogen output.
Adani described this development as a milestone aligned with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. The group stated that the commissioning of this facility not only demonstrates the technical feasibility of renewable-powered hydrogen production but also establishes a benchmark for emission-heavy industries looking to transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
Hydrogen, often hailed as the cleanest energy carrier, emits only water vapour when used. Green hydrogen produced by splitting water using electricity from renewable sources offers an environmentally sustainable alternative to grey hydrogen, which is derived from fossil fuels. With this pilot, Adani aims to showcase how green hydrogen can be produced at scale without reliance on the conventional grid.
The facility in Kutch is part of ANIL’s broader green hydrogen initiative, which includes setting up an integrated ecosystem at Mundra. This larger hub will involve manufacturing critical components such as solar cells, modules, wind turbine generators, and electrolysers. ANIL is also focusing on producing green hydrogen derivatives like green ammonia, green methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel, catering to both domestic and global markets.
Positioned as a proof of concept, the Kutch plant will serve as the foundation for the upcoming green hydrogen hub in Mundra. This project is expected to contribute significantly to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as refining, fertilisers, and heavy transportation. Adani also noted that this pioneering facility reinforces its commitment to innovation and sustainability, helping position India as a global leader in the green hydrogen economy.
The initiative strongly aligns with the goals of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to reduce India’s energy import dependency, improve energy self-sufficiency, and fast-track the decarbonisation of energy-intensive sectors. It also plays a part in realising the larger Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision.
