Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates, met with Terje Pilskog, CEO of Norway’s Scatec, on January 13 to discuss expanding strategic investments in the renewable energy sector, according to a statement by the Cabinet.
Abdelatty underscored the government’s commitment to achieving a green economy and consolidating Egypt’s position as a global hub for green hydrogen.
Furthermore, he noted that Scatec’s portfolio in Egypt is a cornerstone of this national strategy, specifically citing the landmark Obelisk solar power project in Nagaa Hammadi, Qena.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inaugurated the first phase of the Obelisk project on January 12, marking a major advancement in domestic clean energy production.
The Obelisk project’s first phase provides 500 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity integrated with 200 megawatt-hours (MWh) of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), currently the largest installation of its kind in Africa.
During the discussions, Abdelatty encouraged Scatec to expand its operational footprint in Egypt, particularly in projects aimed at exporting clean energy to Europe.
The two sides also explored opportunities for trilateral cooperation in Africa, focusing on developmental renewable energy projects to support the continent’s infrastructure.
