Hyundai unveils first 5MW PEM electrolyser | Electrolysers

Hyundai Motor Group has revealed its first proprietary PEM electrolyser system ahead of mass production, scheduled for next year.

The South Korean conglomerate is displaying the 5MW system for the first time at an event that started on Wednesday (4 November) near Seoul.

While few technical details were disclosed, Hyundai claimed the 12-stack module can produce 700 tonnes of hydrogen per year and can be combined to create several hundred megawatt systems.

The unveiling comes as the company continues to strengthen its position in the hydrogen sector.

Last the year, the company unveiled plans to build planned 1GW PEM electrolyser factory, as part of its $90bn long-term investment strategy. It is also constructing a KRW 930bn ($694m) facility in Ulsan, which will also produce 30,000 fuel cells per year.

The step into electrolyser production marks an expansion from Hyundai’s traditional role focus on hydrogen mobility.

While continuing to pursue car and bus deployments in South Korea and globally, it has been increasing efforts on production.

Earlier this year, Hyundai completed construction of a 500kg per day waste-to-hydrogen facility in North Chungcheong Province, eyeing a capacity expansion to two tonnes per day by 2030.

It also confirmed plans to build a 200MW green hydrogen plant as part of a KRW 9 trillion ($6.2bn) innovation hub in Gunsan City.

The firm’s construction subsidiary, Hyundai E&C, was recently selected by the country’s government to lead a project advancing designs for green hydrogen plants over 100MW in capacity.
