State attracts Rs 1.17L-cr green energy projects

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: Presenting Odisha’s long-term clean-energy roadmap at Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi Tuesday, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the state aims to source 74 per cent of its installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2047 and emerge as the clean-energy engine of eastern India. The state attracted prospective investment proposals worth Rs 1,17,557 crore through 18 memoranda of understanding (MoUs), with a tentative capacity addition of 11,742 MW across renewable and emerging clean-energy sectors at the expo Tuesday.

The proposed investments cover pumped storage, solar, wind, hybrid renewable energy, battery storage, green hydrogen, green data centres and other emerging technologies, marking a significant step in the state’s efforts to accelerate its clean-energy transition.

Majhi described the development as a watershed moment for Odisha’s clean-energy ambitions and said the state is ready to contribute significantly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India self-reliant in clean energy. The MoUs were exchanged after Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo inaugurated the Odisha Pavilion at Bharat Mandapam. They also inaugurated the Netherlands Pavilion. GRIDCO Managing Director Satya Priya Rath exchanged the MoUs with industry partners in the presence of the dignitaries. The event was followed by an Odisha State Plenary on ‘Investment Opportunities in the Renewable Energy Sector in Odisha’, which witnessed participation from more than 900 delegates.

Addressing the plenary, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi highlighted Odisha’s strategic importance in India’s clean-energy transition, citing its abundant natural resources, strong industrial base and strategic port infrastructure as key advantages for attracting investments. He underlined the vast opportunities in renewable energy, energy storage, floating solar, wind power, green hydrogen and green ammonia. He also highlighted the Centre’s policy initiatives and support mechanisms to accelerate investments in these sectors.

The CM said the state envisages meeting at least 33% of industrial electricity consumption through green power at competitive tariffs. Inviting investors to establish clean-energy projects in Odisha, Majhi assured them of a stable and predictable policy framework, time-bound clearances through the single-window mechanism and the strengthening of transmission infrastructure ahead of generation. He said the state government is investing Rs 15,948 crore under Mukhya Mantri Shakti Bikash Yojana to modernise and expand the power transmission network. The CM said the ports at Paradip, Dhamra and Gopalpur offered significant opportunities for developing green-energy production and export facilities, including green hydrogen projects.
