Stiesdal completes 6.5MW alkaline system in Denmark | Electrolysers

Danish electrolyser manufacturer Stiesdal Hydrogen’s first 6.5MW alkaline electrolyser has been put into operation at European Energy’s (EE) green hydrogen facility in Esbjerg.

The system, which was upgraded from a 3.1MW unit installed at the site in 2023, more than doubles the facility’s capacity.

Stiesdal unveiled the system, based on the 3.1MW predecessor, earlier this year.

Fitted at the EE hybrid wind, battery, and green hydrogen site, it has been supplying “several” offtakers via tube trailer deliveries since late September.

Stiesdal bills it as scalable to over 100MW and having a stack lifetime of 60,000 hours.

It also tabled the unit’s capex price tag of around €500/kW ($560) as approximately half the European market average.

The price puts Stiesdal on par with Chinese manufacturers.

It comes as China-based electrolyser manufacturers have sparked fears for Western producers, which could be undercut by the country’s low-cost materials and labour.

They continue to grow in the global electrolyser market, spurred by dominance of the alkaline electrolyser manufacturing, estimated at up to 86% of global capacity by the World Bank.
