Algiers will host the 2nd meeting of Energy Ministers from partner countries in the SoutH2 Corridor project on Thursday. The gathering will focus on exploring cooperation and partnership avenues to ensure a sustainable energy future through the transport of green hydrogen to Europe.
The meeting will bring together representatives from partner nations—namely Algeria, Austria, Germany, Italy, and Tunisia—to review the strategic partnership and examine prospects for deepening cooperation among stakeholders. The goal is to inject momentum into the project, which plans to transport 4 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually from Algeria across 3,000 kilometers to three European nations—a volume representing 10% of projected European demand for clean fuel by 2040.
This initiative serves as a cornerstone in expanding Algerian green hydrogen exports, particularly as transport to Europe will utilize existing natural gas pipeline networks following modernization and technical adaptation.
Initial groundwork for the project began in October 2024 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by Sonatrach and Sonelgaz alongside German firm VNG, Italian companies Snam and SeaCorridor, and Austrian producer Verbund Green Hydrogen. The MoU tasked the joint entities with conducting technical and economic feasibility studies for an integrated project encompassing green hydrogen production in Algeria and export to Europe.
This momentum accelerated during the official visit of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Germany last July, where Sonatrach signed two additional memorandums of understanding with Robert Bosch and Siemens Energy. These agreements aim to deepen collaboration in the energy transition, specifically targeting electrolyzer manufacturing, hydrogen production, equipment maintenance and repair, and specialized technical training.
The inaugural meeting of Energy Ministers involved in the SoutH2 Corridor project, held in Rome in January 2025, culminated in the signing of a Joint Declaration of Political Intent for the strategic infrastructure project. The signatory parties committed to deepening cooperation and advancing development through a dedicated joint working group.
