German companies can apply by December 17 for funding for their international projects for renewable hydrogen and other renewable fuels of non-biological origin. The authorities have earmarked up to EUR 30 million per selected investment. Eligible endeavors are outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) of Germany issued a call to continue supporting the global deployment of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives. In the third round, domestic companies have the opportunity to submit project proposals by December 17.
Potential beneficiaries can also be based elsewhere within the European Economic Area or Switzerland, but with a branch or subsidiary in Germany. Eligible projects are implemented outside of the same region.
The aim is to strengthen the use of German hydrogen technologies in industrial production facilities, as well as to prepare new markets and import routes for hydrogen products. Companies can receive funding of up to EUR 30 million per project for the years 2027 to 2030. They must ensure significant German and European value creation.
Strengthening German expertise in international setting
With the instrument, BMWE is specifically strengthening German expertise in hydrogen technologies in an international setting. Mid-sized companies such as technology suppliers and project developers are a main focus for funding to test innovative international projects and establish new markets.
So far, BMWE supports projects in Chile, Namibia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia and Serbia. More funding for beneficiaries from the 2025 call is expected. The locations are in the regions of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Southern Africa, Asia, South America and Australia. The projects include renewable hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, sustainable aviation fuels and green steel.

In module 1, the ministry is funding the construction of innovative pilot plants for industrially relevant production of renewable hydrogen. It would enable the testing of promising technologies under various climatic conditions and applications, the document reads.
Infrastructure for the storage and transport of renewable hydrogen can be funded in conjunction with a production plant built within the same project. Converting renewable hydrogen into methane, ammonia, methanol or other renewable fuels of non-biological origin is also eligible.
Full applications after initial selection
Developers of promising proposals that BMWE prioritizes would be invited to submit a full application. Final funding agreements are expected in the second half of 2027.
Module 2 is support for project-related feasibility studies. Under the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the segment is for universities and research institutions.
The funding is subject to the approval of the federal budget 2027.
At a digital information event on October 15, interested companies will have the opportunity to learn about funding opportunities and the procedure for submitting project proposals.
