Spanish energy firm Moeve has broken ground on the first 300MW phase of its planned 2GW Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley and Europe’s “largest” green hydrogen project.
In planning since late 2022, the 45,000 tonne per year Onuba project reached final investment decision in March.
Located in Huelva, southern Spain, it could scale to 405MW on an as-yet-unrevealed timeline, and is intended to be joined by a second project in nearby Cádiz.
Moeve CEO, Maarten Wetselaar, said the €1bn ($1.15bn) phase, backed by €304m ($351m) in Spanish government funding from the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme, positions Spain at the “forefront” of European clean energy production,
While other specific offtakers remain to be confirmed, part of its output will feed Moeve’s co-located 2G biofuels plant, which will produce clean fuels including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2027.
Moeve previously revealed early-stage offtake deals with fertiliser major Fertiglobe and energy firm Getec.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that investor Hy24 and Spanish financial institution Cofides would buy a combined 29% stake in the facility, shouldering around €290m (3334.6m) of its total price tag between them.
With Moeve holding a 51% stake, the remaining 20% belongs to Spanish transmission system operator Enagás Renovable.
