Stargate Hydrogen Wins €20.6M EU Grant to Expand Tallinn Electrolyser Plant - News and Statistics

Stargate Hydrogen has finalized a grant agreement with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, securing 20.6 million Euros through an EU Innovation Fund grant, as reported by Hydrogen Central. The money will be directed toward enlarging the company’s production site in Tallinn, Estonia.

The facility will be constructed in multiple stages and is set to manufacture alkaline electrolyser electrodes, pressurised alkaline stacks, and electrolyser systems, with yearly output capacities of 250 megawatts, 150 megawatts, and 66 megawatts respectively. The EU Innovation Fund backing aims to broaden Stargate’s manufacturing footprint in Europe and boost its capacity to provide Power-to-X projects with EU-produced equipment.

The initiative tackles a major hurdle to wider green hydrogen uptake, specifically the expense of the green molecule. Stargate’s technological advances feature a proprietary stack design and electrodes covered with a patented ceramic-based catalyst that substitutes precious metals, lowering dependence on imported critical raw materials while facilitating efficient hydrogen generation.

Across its initial decade of operation, the project is anticipated to prevent roughly 3 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions by enabling broader adoption of cost-effective green hydrogen in hard-to-abate industries such as chemicals, steel, and other energy-intensive sectors.

The grant, funded through revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System, constitutes a notable investment in Estonia’s clean technology sector. The project is projected to generate around 150 direct high-value jobs and to sustain hundreds of additional positions in construction, logistics, maintenance, and the wider European supply chain. The new site is also expected to reinforce regional manufacturing capabilities for strategic clean technologies and enhance the resilience of Europe’s hydrogen value chain.

Marko Virkebau, Chief Executive Officer of Stargate Hydrogen, characterized the grant as a significant milestone for the company and as proof of confidence in its technology and manufacturing approach. He noted that the factory expansion would establish Stargate among the largest electrolyser manufacturers in Europe, a capability he said is crucial for supplying products to large industrial electrolysis projects, including those generating green ammonia, synthetic natural gas, and sustainable aviation fuel.

Stargate Hydrogen completed a successful Series A financing round last year, with participants such as Repsol, described as one of the major hydrogen producers in Europe, and SmartCap, an Estonian state-owned venture capital firm, among others. The company’s clientele includes Fortum, Utilitas, ABB, and Rockfin, among many others throughout Europe, Turkey, and India.

The European Commission has recognized Stargate’s work on advanced alkaline electrolysis technology as an Important Project of Common European Interest. The company has recently delivered a turnkey electrolysis system to Fortum in Finland and has provided electrolysis stacks to several countries in Europe and beyond.

The EU Innovation Fund supported project backs the European Union’s Hydrogen Strategy and matches key policy initiatives including REPowerEU, the Net-Zero Industry Act, and the Clean Industrial Deal, which regard electrolysers as strategic clean technologies for Europe’s industrial future.
