Namibia’s 40MW green ammonia project secures up to $3.6m | Hydrogen News

Climate Fund Managers’ SDG Namibia One has committed up to $3.6m to advance Enersense Energy Namibia’s 40MW, green hydrogen-based fertiliser project in Dâures, Namibia, with commercial operations targeted for the first quarter of 2030.

Targeting financial close in the second quarter of 2028, it is expected to produce up to 20,000 tonnes of green ammonia and 80,000 tonnes of ammonium sulphate fertiliser per year.

It would draw on 60MW of solar PV and 10MW of wind capacity plus a 65MWh battery energy storage system to power 40MW of electrolysis, producing green hydrogen for conversion into green ammonia and, ultimately, fertiliser.

SDG’s investment goes towards a total development budget of $7.1m, with funding from the EU’s Global Gateway, a 2021-launched mechanism intended to mobilise up to €300bn ($346bn) to support green projects across sectors by 2027.

Around $17.7m from organisations including the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), and the UK government has already been mobilised for pilot and proof-of-concept developments.

The pilot is expected to produce Namibia’s first locally manufactured green fertiliser before year-end.

Leveraging some of the world’s strongest solar and wind resources, the country is emerging as a leader in Africa’s green hydrogen and derivative sectors.

Access to global shipping routes also positions it as a potential mass exporter, however, concerns remain around demand. In September 2025, Germany’s RWE pulled out of Namibia’s 3GW, $10bn Hyphen green hydrogen project, citing slower-than-expected demand in Europe.

High project costs in Africa have also been cited as a bottleneck, and the Energy Industries Council (EIC) recently argued that the continent needs clearer policy signals and financial mechanisms to spread risks.
