Global cumulative investment in clean hydrogen has exceeded $130 billion across more than 570 projects, according to a new report from the Hydrogen Council released on Thursday. The industry-led association, as reported by OilPrice.com, attributed the acceleration to an oil and gas supply shock tied to the Middle East conflict, which has elevated energy security as a driver of uptake alongside industrial growth and decarbonization goals.

The Hydrogen Council’s Global Hydrogen Compass 2026 report states that total committed investment has topped $130 billion for 6.9 million tons per annum of capacity. Operational capacity has risen by 70% this year to 1.7 mtpa and is expected to double next year as projects currently under construction begin operations.

Europe holds the second-largest cumulative investment in renewable hydrogen capacity at approximately $30 billion, with more than half of that amount dedicated to hydrogen end-uses.

While decarbonization remains a critical global driver of clean hydrogen investment and project development, the Hydrogen Council indicated that current momentum is being propelled by energy security considerations, with hydrogen having become a strategic resilience lever.

Despite the investment growth, green hydrogen production via electrolysis using renewable energy remains expensive and has not met expectations in recent years. A significant gap persists between planned and actually launched projects, reflecting high costs and difficulties in securing offtake agreements.

The International Energy Agency, in its annual Global Hydrogen Review published in June, noted that the Middle East crisis is renewing interest in hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels as long-term options for strengthening energy security. However, the agency cautioned that low-emissions hydrogen remains far from the scale required to provide an immediate response.

The IEA identified persistent barriers including high costs, uncertain demand, complex regulations, and a lack of infrastructure as factors continuing to slow the development of low-emissions hydrogen, putting 2030 targets announced by governments increasingly out of reach.
