Energy firm Uniper will proceed with developing its 2.6 million tonnes per year ammonia-to-hydrogen import facility in Germany, after receiving sufficient expressions of interest from potential offtakers.
The company said an open season launched in May received capacity requests to enable it to continue developing its Hydrogen Import Terminal Wilhelmshaven.
Billing this as the finalisation of phase 1, the firm will now proceed to issue preliminary commercial agreements and set out rules for the transit of molecules through the facility.
The terminal is planned to receive up to 2.6 million tonnes of ammonia and crack it into around 350,000 tonnes of hydrogen to feed into Germany’s 9,000km hydrogen core network. It will also include rail loading infrastructure for onward ammonia transport.
While Uniper did not disclose volumes under the open season, the firm has already committed to importing up to 500,000 tonnes of ammonia per year from AM Green’s 1.3GW project in India, enough to provide around 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen.
The site could also host a 1GW green hydrogen plant, positioning it as a major hydrogen gateway.
Uniper said it plans to launch “one or several” additional windows for expressions of interest in the facility.
It would bolster Germany’s green hydrogen import strategy, tabled to bring up to 2.73 million tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen into the country by 2030.
