Madurai: The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) launched a policy brief outlining pathways to position VO Chidambaranar Port as a green shipping corridor node on the India-Europe trade lane at India Clean Transportation Summit 2026 in New Delhi. Designated a green hydrogen hub under National Green Hydrogen Mission, VOC Port was the first Indian port to produce green hydrogen. Its pilot project has provided experience in renewable energy generation, electrolysis, hydrogen storage and fuel-cell operations. The port has allotted 501 acres to green-fuel developers for stated investments of around Rs41,860 crore. Port authority chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit said the assessment offered strategic direction for strengthening the port’s green-fuel ecosystem and maritime decarbonisation role. The assessment, among the early independent studies of an individual Indian port’s green-fuel readiness, was launched by ICCT researcher Ketan Gore.
