A 1.7GW green hydrogen and ammonia project planned for Southern Chile’s Magallanes region has received environmental permission from the Chilean government.
The HNH Energy consortium behind the project, featuring Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), Austria Energy, and Oekowind, said the milestone provides “greater certainty,” but outlined further required sector-specific permissions.
The project was launched in 2022 and could integrate 3.5GW of onshore wind assets to power 3GW of electrolysis and produce up to 1.35 million tonnes of green ammonia per year.
HNH expects to begin construction of the site next year. It has not confirmed an estimated date for operations or specific offtakers for the volumes produced by the development.
However, sitting under CIP’s €3bn ($3.5bn) energy transition fund, the project is due to target global export.
HNH said it shared environmental details from the project’s outset with Chile’s Environmental Assessment Commission, streamlining the permitting process.
The Magallanes region is increasingly seen as a hotbed for large-scale hydrogen and derivative projects as its abundant capacity for wind energy resources has attracted global developers.
In July, Chilean renewables firm Consorcio Austral submitted the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Acurio project, a $4.7bn green hydrogen and ammonia facility in the province targeting construction in 2029.
Earlier in the year, Chile’s government reset its national green hydrogen strategy, abandoning an ambitious 25GW production goal in favour of large-scale consumption and export targets.
