Klaipeda Port Unveils Green Methanol Bunkering Vessel Concept for Baltic Shipping - News and Statistics

The Port of Klaipeda has unveiled a design for a green methanol bunkering vessel, positioning itself for anticipated growth in alternative marine fuel demand. The planned ship is set to hold 800 tonnes of green methanol and deliver up to 250,000 tonnes annually.

This initiative forms part of Klaipeda’s wider strategy to ready its facilities for more sustainable maritime operations. The port authority explored green methanol bunkering possibilities under the H2Deri@BSP initiative, a collaboration involving the authority and 14 international partners, centered on hydrogen-derived fuels and emission-free shipping.

The research delved into projected green methanol demand, alongside regulatory frameworks, prospective clients, supply networks, and ecological advantages. Moffatt & Nichol Baltics conducted an assessment within this effort, concluding that the Baltic green methanol sector remains nascent. Yet, as demand escalates, ports providing alternative fuels may gain greater appeal to shipping operators.

Additionally, the initiative yielded a technical blueprint and conceptual layout for a specialized bunkering vessel. Western Baltic Engineering, a subsidiary of the Western Shipyard Group, crafted this design. The ship is tailored for shallow-water operations and localized refueling tasks, with an 800-tonne methanol capacity and a yearly supply potential of 250,000 tonnes.

Klaipeda currently runs a green hydrogen production site, and the study highlighted opportunities to leverage this hydrogen for future methanol output. The port authority anticipates demand from various ship categories, such as regional carriers, ferries, passenger vessels, and offshore wind farm support ships.

Algis Latakas, the port authority’s CEO, remarked that the energy shift is reshaping the maritime industry and fueling a need for greener options. He noted the port’s aim to stay ready as eco-friendly shipping routes emerge across the Baltic.

Klaipeda already accommodates a methanol-fueled containership, with the X-Press Feeders Eco Umande visiting the Lithuanian port since 2024. The port has also entered a cooperation pact with other harbors to advance green methanol infrastructure. The authority sees bunkering services as a potential new revenue stream that could bolster Klaipeda’s standing in the Baltic shipping landscape.
