Next Hydrogen Designs 10 MW Hydrogen Fueling Station in British Columbia


Next Hydrogen Solutions Inc., a Canadian company specializing in electrolysers, has completed a Basic Design Engineering Package (BDEP) for a planned 10-megawatt (MW) hydrogen fueling station in British Columbia, Canada. The project, referred to as the “BC Project,” is being carried out with a customer whose identity has not been disclosed by the company. This technical milestone is meant to fully define the scope and costing of the facility ahead of a final investment decision expected by the end of 2026, according to Next Hydrogen. Construction of the station is anticipated for late 2027 or early 2028.

A province committed to decarbonizing transportation

British Columbia continues to invest in hydrogen technology, drawing on its hydroelectric capacity and an established clean-tech sector. Hydrogen-fueled trucks are currently being tested in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, where freight corridors and hydrogen hubs are advancing within the province, according to Next Hydrogen. The BC Project fits into this trend by targeting hydrogen production near or on the site of demand itself. The company states that this proximity-based approach would offer the most competitive path to green hydrogen production costs.

A containerized technology built in Canada

The station’s design is based on Next Hydrogen’s containerized electrolysers, manufactured in Canada and already commercially deployed. The BDEP allows for precise definition of the project’s technical specifications and costs, a step considered essential ahead of the final investment decision. According to the company, the standardized, prefabricated solution is intended to enable quick installation and dependable long-term operation.

“On-site hydrogen production near or co-located with demand is the best path to competitive green hydrogen costs. Our Canadian technology is commercially operational and is ideal for working with renewable energy requiring variable operating conditions,” said Stephen Griggs, Executive Chair of Next Hydrogen. “By delivering a standardized plant solution, Next Hydrogen can provide prefabricated containerized solutions for quick installation and dependable long-term operation,” he added, saying the company was proud to support the project as British Columbia works to decarbonize its transportation sector.
