The Center for Hydrogen Safety, a global non-profit community under the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, continues to rely on expert panels to support safe hydrogen deployment. According to the source, the Hydrogen Safety Panel brings together specialists who identify risks, share lessons learned, and guide safer projects across the industry.

Four Decades of Hydrogen Experience

Larry Moulthrop, a hydrogen systems and safety consultant, has spent more than four decades in hydrogen technology. He noted that the advancement of renewable green hydrogen as a key energy carrier has survived multiple up-and-down development cycles. When he began his research and development career in the 1970s, global oil disruptions prompted the U.S. Department of Energy to promote large-scale bulk hydrogen water electrolysis development. Interest waned in the 1980s due to an oil glut, but subsequent cycles driven by regional conflicts, political and economic shifts, and fluctuating recognition of environmental crises have not stopped the sector’s maturation.

Safety Lessons from Proton

Moulthrop recalled that Proton’s founding team promised investors they could adapt aerospace and military proton exchange membrane water electrolysis technology for packaged commercial hydrogen-generating appliances. The challenge was simplifying product design to reduce cost without compromising safety. The team minimized internal hydrogen and oxygen inventory volumes and optimized internal air ventilation placement to reduce hazardous area classification. These measures cut product costs while lowering hazard levels. The biggest lesson was verifying and validating innovations through rigorous hazard analysis and testing, applying training from their aerospace engineering backgrounds. As Proton grew, the company maintained a quality management system that mandated thorough multi-participant safety reviews from initial design through every product and procedure change, with rigorous documentation of the reasons for each modification.

Standards and Community Outreach

Moulthrop explained that standards reflect expert consensus on best safety practices, and good standards are regularly peer-reviewed and updated with new data-based findings. In 2014, while at Proton Onsite, Toyota asked his team to help tell a story of commonality and technology development to gain acceptance for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The result was the Oil Creek short film project. Early settlers near Titusville, Pennsylvania, named Oil Creek for the oily sheen from crude oil seeps. In 1858, Colonel Frank Drake developed the first commercial petroleum oil well on an island in the creek. The film showed students drawing water from Oil Creek to make hydrogen fuel for Toyota vehicles, linking hydrogen technology to local history and shared experiences to make it more relatable and acceptable.
