H2 Production – Portugal: RCT Hydrogen supplies 10 MW electrolyser for the Port of Sines


The final investment decision was made at the beginning of July: RCT Hydrogen has been awarded the contract for a 10 MW electrolyser project at the Port of Sines, south of Lisbon. The client is the Portuguese company Beyond Green Lda, which acts as the operating company for the project. The project is named “Green Hydrogen Sines” and is part of the “Sines Green Hydrogen Valley” (SinesH2GValley).

According to the company, the contract includes the complete delivery of all components to connect the electrolyser to the medium-voltage grid and produce hydrogen based on electricity from renewable energies. RCT Hydrogen is also responsible for commissioning and production start-up.

Alkaline pressure electrolysis as a technological basis

An alkaline pressure electrolysis is used. “The project fits perfectly into RCT Hydrogen’s portfolio,” says Eric Rüland, Vice President Sales and Products at RCT Hydrogen. “A robust alkaline electrolyser technology that will efficiently and reliably produce hydrogen under Portugal’s sunny conditions.” According to the company, the technology is TÜV-certified and manufactured in Germany.

Cost-optimized components are supplied by the Chinese partner Guofuhee, which has experience in manufacturing hydrogen plants. Important manufacturing steps are to take place in Germany and Europe, according to RCT Hydrogen.

Ambitious schedule until summer 2027

Miguel Matias, chairman of Beyond Green, describes the schedule as challenging: “We are pleased to sign the turnkey contract with our partner RCT GH, which acts not only as a reliable supplier for the plants but also for the commissioning and production start of green hydrogen production.” Delivery is to begin in 2026, with production starting in the summer of 2027. Matias considers the schedule feasible with the right partners.

Integrated approach with refuelling stations and charging infrastructure

Beyond Green plans to build downstream infrastructure in addition to hydrogen production. This includes a network of refuelling stations for green hydrogen and ultra-fast charging stations for electric vehicles. These charging stations are to be powered by electricity from renewable energies, with hydrogen storage and fuel cells serving as buffers. According to Beyond Green, this approach addresses two challenges of the energy transition: the limited availability of hydrogen refuelling stations and the growing demand for high-performance charging networks for electric vehicles.

Background on the companies

RCT GH GmbH, based in Konstanz, develops and manufactures solutions for the production of green hydrogen based on water electrolysis. The company collaborates with the Chinese partner Guofuhee and the engineering team of RCT Solutions GmbH. In addition to industrial plants in the power range of 1 to 5 MW, RCT Hydrogen also serves large projects from 100 MW and has established partnerships along the entire value chain.

Beyond Green is a Portuguese company specializing in the energy sector, including the planning, construction, installation, and maintenance of plants for the generation and transmission of electrical energy as well as hydrogen from renewable and conventional sources.
