US-based Infinium has revealed it has been supplying green hydrogen-based e-naphtha to a Swiss premium sportswear brand On for use in manufacturing athletic footwear.
An unspecified volume of e-naphtha has been supplied from Infinium’s first commercial green hydrogen-based e-fuel production facility in Corpus Christi, Texas, to produce ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam used in trainers.
Naphtha is traditionally a processed crude oil product and is used to manufacture plastics, synthetic rubber, and other petrochemicals.
The company claims On’s midsole becomes the “world’s first” commercially scaled sportswear application of captured CO2 in EVA foam.
Infinium’s Project Pathfinder site combines green hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide to make e-naphtha, e-diesel, and synthetic jet fuels through a patented catalyst-based process.
Premium markets are often tipped as key early markets for green hydrogen-derived products, due to higher willingness from customers to pay for green labels.
Infinium is currently constructing its Roadrunner plant, also in Texas, which will use 100MW of electrolysers to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of fuel per year from 2027. It will supply e-fuels to International Airlines Group under a 10-year deal.
