EU approves EWE-Verbund green hydrogen joint venture | Hydrogen News

German and Austrian utilities EWE and Verbund have been cleared by the European Commission to form a green hydrogen joint venture (JV).

The previously unannounced JV would see a tie-up between the firm’s green hydrogen businesses EWE Hydrogen and Verbund Green Hydrogen.

While details remain sparse, the Commission said the new entity “relates primarily to the production and sale of green hydrogen.”

Responding to H2 View enquiries, EWE confirmed the joint venture will operate in Germany in the “field of green hydrogen production and sales.”

While unable to share any further information, a spokesperson said the companies were preparing an official announcement.

The Commission concluded the JV formation would not raise competition concerns, given the companies’ “negligible activity” level across the bloc.

Separately, EWE and Verbund are involved in significant green hydrogen projects.

EWE recently broke ground on a 25km hydrogen pipeline, which will connect its 320MW electrolyser to the country’s 9,000km hydrogen core network, as well as supplying 10,000 tonnes-per-year to steelmaker Salzgitter’s direct reduced iron project.

Verbund is set to build a 20MW plant, backed by €100m ($114m) in funding from Austria’s government. The hydrogen will be used for e-methanol production at an existing biorefinery.
