The University of Oulu and Amity University in India are forging a joint educational and research partnership to boost proficiency in hydrogen technologies and the green transition. A framework agreement for a Dual Degree doctoral training program has been finalized, and the institutions are now developing the curriculum.
Program Details and Support
The collaboration encompasses a Dual Degree doctoral training program in hydrogen technology and a Double Degree Master’s program in physics, initially focusing on hydrogen energy and the green transition. This initiative is backed by H2FIND – Hydrogen Education for Finland-India Collaboration, a TFK project funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education from 2025 to 2027. The project facilitates joint education through co-supervision, student and staff mobility, and shared knowledge in hydrogen, green transition, and associated fields.
Climate change, energy security, and the expanding hydrogen sector in Finland, the European Union, and India are driving demand for skilled professionals. Industry forecasts indicate millions of specialist positions will be needed within this decade, while specialized physics-based hydrogen education remains scarce worldwide. The partnership aims to merge technical and research capabilities with a comprehensive grasp of the societal aspects of hydrogen technologies. The common objective is to train future clean energy research leaders with strong intercultural skills and insight into global and regional hydrogen economy dynamics.
Professor Marko Huttula, who leads hydrogen research at the University of Oulu, noted that collaboration with India is becoming more vital for Finland, and both countries share aligned interests in hydrogen and the green transition within the energy sector. He emphasized that expanding higher education opportunities is a strategic goal for both nations, and these joint efforts address the growing role of higher education in energy. Dr. Harishchandra Singh, a Ramanujan Fellow at Amity University, remarked that for India, this partnership is tied to energy security, as the country imports most of its fossil fuels, and green hydrogen offers a viable path to change that. He added that the collaboration provides students with a genuine dual-ecosystem experience, blending Finnish expertise in hydrogen infrastructure with the scale and variety of India’s energy challenges.
Doctoral and Master’s Program Structure
A Framework Agreement for the Dual Degree doctoral training program has been signed, outlining general guidelines. Each doctoral candidate will have an Individual Co-supervision Agreement specifying the research topic, contributions from both universities, supervision arrangements, training and mobility schedule, and funding plan. The program intends to include an equal number of supervisors from the University of Oulu and Amity University, with research visits to the partner institution lasting between six and 24 months total. At the University of Oulu, scientific expertise will come from research units within the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Technology, including the Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit, Sustainable Chemistry, Process Metallurgy, Materials and Mechanical Engineering, and Environmental and Chemical Engineering.
Prof. Sunita Rattan, Director of Applied Chemistry at Amity University, stated that the initiative creates a solid foundation for international doctoral mobility and collaborative research in hydrogen technologies, Space Sciences, Engineering Sciences, and other emerging interdisciplinary fields. The Double Degree Master’s program is still in the planning stage, with a preliminary model offering a Master of Science in Physics specializing in Hydrogen Energy and Green Transition. Students would spend the first year at Amity University and the second year at the University of Oulu, with initial student selection occurring at Amity. According to the tentative timeline, the first cohort would begin at Amity University in autumn 2027. Specialization selection and admission to the University of Oulu would happen in spring 2028, with the first students relocating to Oulu in autumn 2028.
Strategic Alignment and Research Integration
The collaboration builds on existing research ties, comparable expertise profiles, and shared strategic priorities. Amity University’s Hydrogen Mission aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, while the University of Oulu’s H2FUTURE research program, funded by the Research Council of Finland, focuses on hydrogen as a climate change solution. H2FUTURE integrates research on sustainable hydrogen production and use, including solar hydrogen, carbon-emission-free hydrogen technologies, hydrogen in metal production, and ultra-high-strength steel solutions. The partnership with Amity University enhances the international scope of this work by linking education, mobility, and research expertise.
