European Hydrogen Bank Third Auction Results: €1.09 Billion for 1.1 GW Hydrogen Projects - News and Statistics

On 7 May 2026, the European Hydrogen Bank published results from its third auction, allocating EUR1.09 billion across nine projects with a combined electrolyser capacity of 1.1GW, according to Hydrogen Central. Over the first ten years of operation, these projects are expected to produce 1.3 million tonnes of RFNBO and low-carbon electrolytic hydrogen while reducing approximately 9 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

The European Hydrogen Bank has proven to be a valuable funding tool for first-mover hydrogen projects, building on lessons from its first two auctions. The European Commission allocated a total budget of EUR3.3 billion to the Bank, divided into EUR800 million for the first auction, EUR1.2 billion for the second, and EUR1.3 billion for the current edition. However, not all of this money has been or will be disbursed.

The article notes that the European Commission should renew the European Hydrogen Bank, though the prospect of renewal remains unclear. The recently announced EU Industrial Decarbonisation Bank introduces a new angle for consideration, as the two institutions offer potential for complementarity. Renewing the Hydrogen Bank and designing the Decarbonisation Bank to include all clean technologies could unlock significant gains in the hydrogen sector.
