ENGIE and European Energy Partner on 150 MW Renewable Hydrogen Project in Denmark - News and Statistics

ENGIE and European Energy have entered into a cooperation agreement to advance a large-scale renewable hydrogen project in Denmark, as reported by Hydrogen Central.

The project, located in Aabenraa Municipality near Kasso, will include an electrolyser capacity of up to 150 MW. The Kasso site is already home to the world’s first industrial-scale e-methanol plant, which is owned by Mitsui & Co. Ltd. and European Energy.

The new facility is intended to support renewable hydrogen demand in Germany and connect to the future Danish-German Hydrogen Backbone infrastructure. The hydrogen produced is expected to supply industrial and mobility demand in Germany, supporting the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors within the EU.

The project has been selected under Germany’s hydrogen auction (AaaS 25), linked to the European Hydrogen Bank. The targeted commercial operation date is aligned with the expected commissioning of Denmark’s hydrogen backbone infrastructure around 2030.

The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration during the next stages of project development, including technical studies and work related to hydrogen transport. Under this agreement, ENGIE reserves the marketing right of more than 20,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per annum.

Henri Domenach, Managing Director of Energy Management at ENGIE, commented that the two companies have strong complementarities geographically and across the electricity and hydrogen value chains. He noted that ENGIE aims to support clients in their decarbonization journey and offer renewable or low-carbon hydrogen at competitive prices, and that the Kasso project will enable ENGIE to strengthen its offering to German clients from 2030 onwards.

Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, EVP and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy, said the cooperation will play an important role in connecting renewable energy production with industrial decarbonisation across Europe. He indicated that through experience with the existing Kasso facility and production of green fuels, the company is well-positioned to make a great project, and that ENGIE’s expertise in connecting production and demand of renewable energy will benefit both parties.
