Green hydrogen developer AM Green and the V O Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) have entered into an agreement to set up a green ammonia production and bunkering hub at Tuticorin port in Tamil Nadu, with investments that could cross Rs 22,000 crore across production and bunkering facilities.
Through a memorandum of understanding signed on 28 May, the two sides plan to build up to 2,00,000 tonnes a year of green ammonia bunkering capacity at the port by 2029-30, calling for an estimated outlay of Rs 2,000 crore, AM Green said in a statement.
The partners also foresee scope to raise bunkering capacity to 500,000 tonnes annually by 2035, entailing total investments of roughly Rs 5,000 crore, depending on demand for low-carbon marine fuels.
The pact backs AM Green’s planned green ammonia production unit of 1 million tonnes a year near the port, a venture likely to draw about Rs 15,000 crore.
The company said the project would also trigger nearly Rs 35,000 crore of investment in the renewable power generation needed to run the facility.
The tie-up seeks to make Tuticorin a leading centre for green maritime fuels as shipping firms worldwide gear up to meet tightening emission norms and look for alternatives to traditional bunker fuels.
“VOC Port’s existing ammonia infrastructure, its Green Hydrogen Hub designation, and its connectivity to global shipping lanes make this partnership a critical building block in AM Green’s pan-India commercialisation strategy,” said AM Green Chief Executive Gautam Reddy Kumbam.
VOCPA Chairman Susanta Kumar Nath said the port authority would extend infrastructure and institutional support to develop Tuticorin into a top destination for green ammonia bunkering and exports.
Backed by the founders of Greenko Group, AM Green is aiming for over 4 million tonnes a year of green ammonia capacity across India by 2030.
