Bioenergy and green hydrogen drive India’s energy future as Gadkari announces hydrogen bus, truck pilot


New Delhi: Highlighting the growing role of bioenergy and green hydrogen in India’s clean energy transition, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday announced a pilot project to deploy hydrogen-powered buses and trucks on 10 roads across the country, while asserting that India has the potential to evolve from an energy-importing nation into an energy exporter.

Speaking at the launch of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex Fuel in New Delhi, Gadkari said the hydrogen mobility initiative has attracted participation from major companies including Reliance Industries, Tata Group, NTPC and Ashok Leyland, The Economic Times reported.

“We have undertaken a pilot project that on 10 roads of India hydrogen buses and trucks will start. Reliance, Tata, NTPC, Ashok Leyland and many others have joined hands with us for this. We have started making hydrogen,” the minister said.

Gadkari said India is making significant progress in alternative fuels such as ethanol, green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel, which are emerging as key pillars of the country’s strategy to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The minister noted that the development of domestic clean-energy resources could help transform India’s energy landscape and strengthen long-term energy security.

The hydrogen vehicle pilot is expected to provide practical experience in operating hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles and support the development of a wider green hydrogen transport ecosystem.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also attended the event, which marked the launch of the flex-fuel version of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR.

The latest initiative forms part of the government’s broader push to promote bioenergy, green hydrogen and other low-carbon fuels as India seeks to build a cleaner and more self-reliant energy future.
