H2 Mobility cuts green hydrogen prices 10% at five sites after quota credit sales

Germany’s largest hydrogen refuelling station operator H2 Mobility will cut fuel prices by 10% across five stations, after federal mandates and certificate trading came into force.

The company said improved sales due to recently passed mandates, and increased revenues from fuel certificate sales had lowered operating costs.

Price adjustments will be applied to stations in Mannheim, Heidelberg, Frankenthal, Ludwigshafen, and Düsseldorf-Höherweg. According to H2 Mobility’s live station map, those locations currently offer hydrogen at around €13.50 ($15.68) per kilogramme.

These are all stations where the operator has green hydrogen supply deals in place.

The German parliament recently passed the GHG Quota, setting mandates to see green hydrogen make up 10% of transport energy by 2040. It also has a 0.1% green hydrogen target for this year.

However, the law also includes a trading scheme which allows companies that exceed emission reduction targets to sell surplus credits to fuel distributors who fail to meet the quotas.

H2 Mobility said sales of those credits helped offset higher procurement costs.

Martin Jüngel, CFO of H2 Mobility, said the lower prices represent the first tangible benefits of the GHG Quota for fuel cell vehicle customers.

However, the price cuts are limited to stations that supply renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO)-certified hydrogen.

The majority of H2 Mobility’s network relies on grey hydrogen, while the company plans to provide entirely green hydrogen across its sites by 2028.

Over the past year, the operator has been lining up green hydrogen offtake deals with companies like Lhyfe.
