SSE pauses ‘standalone’ hydrogen production projects amid UK policy delays | Hydrogen News

UK energy firm SSE has paused its “standalone” hydrogen production projects amid “material policy delays” and will instead focus on regional infrastructure development and potential clean hydrogen offtake.

In its full-year results, it reported a £2.24bn ($31.4bn) operating profit, the company confirmed it logged a £21.8m ($29.2m) write-down on its own hydrogen production projects and joint venture investments in its thermal power generation subsidiary, SSE Thermal.

“During the course of 2025, SSE reviewed its hydrogen development strategy and, in response to material policy delays to the roll-out of low-carbon hydrogen, took the decision to pause its standalone hydrogen production projects,” it said.

SSE confirmed to H2 View the affected projects are a 40MW green hydrogen plant originally planned with EET Hydrogen in Ellesmere Port, a 50MW green hydrogen development in Yorkshire, and the 1GW H2NorthEast blue hydrogen project in Teesside with Kellas Midstream.
