Koelnmesse Launches Hydrogen Forklift Fleet with Green Refuelling Infrastructure - News and Statistics

Koelnmesse has put into service a hydrogen-powered forklift fleet at its Cologne trade fair site, aiming to cut emissions in logistics operations. The company calls this the first use of locally emission-free hydrogen forklifts at an exhibition venue. The project combines green hydrogen supply, on-site refueling infrastructure, and fuel-cell vehicle operations for setting up and dismantling exhibitions.

Logistics firm DSV runs the fleet together with JA-Gastechnology GmbH and hydrogen provider Tyczka. A hydrogen refueling station was built on the exhibition grounds in cooperation with JA-Gastechnology GmbH, while Tyczka delivers the green hydrogen. The hydrogen is made from water using renewable electricity, eliminating fossil fuels and related CO2 emissions from production.

The deployment is designed around the needs of exhibition logistics, where equipment reliability and fast turnaround are essential during setup and teardown. By placing refueling infrastructure within the venue, the partners aim to enable continuous logistics operations without local exhaust emissions. DSV serves as the official logistics provider for the Koelnmesse site. The first ten hydrogen forklifts are now operating along with the refueling station.

According to the companies, fuel-cell forklifts can be refueled quickly and maintain steady performance during extended use, making them an alternative to battery-electric equipment in demanding logistics settings. Koelnmesse noted that hydrogen forklifts offer benefits due to short refueling times and high availability. The fuel cells produce no local emissions, only water vapor, and the lack of soot and other pollutants may improve air quality in exhibition facilities.

Koelnmesse tied the initiative to broader sustainability goals for the trade fair industry, pointing out that many long-term measures involve infrastructure and logistics systems not visible to visitors or exhibitors. Using green hydrogen from electrolysis powered by renewable electricity is highlighted as a key difference from hydrogen made with natural gas. The model addresses both vehicle emissions and fuel production emissions in the logistics chain.

The project shows how exhibition operators and logistics providers are testing alternative energy systems in venue operations, expanding decarbonization efforts to freight handling and material movement. Koelnmesse said future plans could involve converting surplus electricity from its solar panels into hydrogen on site via electrolysis. This might create a closed energy loop linking renewable power generation to logistics fuel use. The new refueling station is part of the infrastructure needed for such a system. If realized, it would let renewable electricity from the venue directly fuel hydrogen production for logistics equipment.

The initiative places Koelnmesse among exhibition venues exploring hydrogen-based operations. The partners described it as part of a broader push to introduce climate-friendly solutions in the exhibition and events sector. For logistics operators, the deployment also acts as a real-world test of hydrogen-powered material handling equipment in high-intensity event settings.
