Aternium Selects Siemens Energy for FEED Study of Clean Hydrogen Facility


A technology partnership to optimize design

Siemens Energy will contribute its advanced technologies to ensure the facility’s efficiency and reliability. Dan Restrepo, Head of Sales for sustainable energy systems in the Americas at Siemens Energy, stated that the FEED study will allow for the optimization and finalization of a bespoke design before execution. Kiewit Engineering Group, which performed the pre-FEED study, will collaborate with Siemens throughout the process. The goal is to standardize the design, safety, and environmental standards of the project.

Aternium’s model relies on integrating advanced digital technology with chemical manufacturing to create a network of highly efficient plants. The company aims to reduce emissions from hard-to-decarbonize sectors, such as heavy chemicals and maritime transport. Spiral Hydrogen raises €2.7m for green hydrogen pilot in Rotterdam, illustrating the investment momentum in Europe.

A critical asset: deuterium

Heavy water, or deuterium, extraction is a key part of the project. Deuterium is essential for nuclear fusion and is used in the manufacturing of semiconductors, microchips, fiber-optic cables, and OLED displays. This diversification gives Aternium a unique position in the hydrogen market. The Mid-Atlantic region was chosen for its industrial ecosystem and decarbonization potential.

Andrew Cottone, CEO of Aternium, said this FEED study is a cornerstone of their strategic plan to lead the hydrogen economy. “This partnership positions us to contribute significantly to the global energy transition,” he added. The company plans to deploy multiple facilities in the region, creating an integrated infrastructure for clean hydrogen and heavy water.
