Two Norwegian hydrogen companies have been awarded a total of NOK 1.35bn (EUR 123.9m) in EU funding, according to Enova.
The two companies, GreenH and Gen2 Energy, will produce emission-free hydrogen to be used as fuel for ships.
”This is very good news for the Norwegian hydrogen industry. When Norwegian companies succeed in the competition for EU funds, it shows that we have expertise and technology that is in demand in Europe,” Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen comments in a press release from Enova.
GreenH will now build a plant in Sola in Rogaland, while Gen2 is building in Mosjøen in Nordland. The two companies will split the EU grant of EUR 124 million equally between them.
Emissions-free ships are considered crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Shipping accounts for 2.4% of the world’s total emissions. In Norway, the share is as high as 7.8%.
