Nel ASA has unveiled its latest pressurized alkaline electrolyzer system. The Norwegian firm indicated that this platform represents a novel methodology for hydrogen generation, intended to streamline project implementation while boosting cost-effectiveness, operational efficiency, and expandability. Nel stated it can reach an estimated complete turnkey expense of less than $1,450 per kilowatt for a 25-megawatt installation, with further cost advantages anticipated at larger capacities. These projections assume hydrogen supplied at 30 bar pressure with 99.99% purity. The company pointed out that numerous current industrial hydrogen initiatives often incur total system expenses near $3,000 per kilowatt. The new system is built as a modular configuration that diminishes overall facility intricacy via increased component uniformity. It seeks to elevate operational effectiveness by enhancing stack performance and streamlining balance-of-plant needs. Moreover, the pressurized design lessens or removes the requirement for subsequent compression, potentially cutting both installation expenditures and energy usage. Nel also anticipates the system will accelerate deployment schedules for large-scale renewable hydrogen ventures in industrial settings. Overall, this launch is part of the company’s wider approach to rendering alkaline electrolysis more economically viable and appropriate for gigawatt-level hydrogen output.
De Nora has obtained an initial batch of orders from the Thyssenkrupp nucera joint venture concerning the Moeve project in Andalusia, Spain, identified as Southern Europe’s biggest green hydrogen initiative. De Nora’s supply includes delivering electrolytic cells for alkaline water electrolysis, equipped with high-performance anode and cathode coatings, amounting to 300 megawatts of total capacity. The complete order’s potential worth falls between 30 and 40 million euros.
The European Commission has sanctioned 5 billion euros ($5.8 billion) under EU state aid regulations to assist industrial sector companies in decarbonizing their manufacturing operations. Qualifying projects must entail fundamental technological shifts and substitute fossil fuels or raw materials with low-carbon options like electrification, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, carbon capture and utilization, biomethane usage, along with heat recovery and storage. Initiatives chosen via a competitive bidding process will receive two-way carbon contracts for difference spanning 15 years.
In another move, the European Commission has granted 11.2 million euros through 2030 to a consortium headed by the University of Vaasa in Finland to showcase a large vessel driven by a hydrogen-capable internal combustion engine. The initiative centers on a novel engine design able to operate on hydrogen and biomethane, backed by a contemporary fuel blending and delivery system plus an advanced exhaust treatment method. Participants include Wartsila, Wegemt, NTUA, TalTech, the American Bureau of Shipping, Deltamarin, the University of Oulu, Abo Akademi University, Meric Wave Computanics, DLR, BALance Technology Consulting, Meyer Werft, and Wasaline.
The University of Birmingham has disclosed fresh research on a low-temperature hydrogen production technique that could allow both central facilities and smaller local plants to function using waste heat from major industrial processes. The university noted that existing catalysts typically split water at 700–1,000 degrees Celsius and need temperatures of 1,300–1,500 degrees Celsius for regeneration between water-splitting cycles. Investigators under Professor Yulong Ding from the university’s School of Chemical Engineering have shown that these working temperatures can be lowered by roughly 500 degrees Celsius through a perovskite catalyst, conducted jointly with the University of Science and Technology Beijing. The University of Birmingham Enterprise, tasked with commercializing the technology in Europe, has submitted a patent application covering BNCF catalyst usage and is pursuing development collaborators.
Meanwhile, a quartet of researchers led by the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid has determined that choices regarding electrolyzer stack replacement heavily rely on production circumstances. Their investigation indicated that prolonging stack operation can be financially beneficial in systems with low capacity factors and inexpensive electricity. The researchers emphasized that no single stack management approach or end-of-life threshold is universally ideal. Instead, the economically ideal lifespan of an electrolyzer is heavily contingent on the operational setting, especially electricity price and system usage, attributing the ambiguity mainly to the absence of definitive international standards governing electrolyzer durability.
