Jordan – Green Ammonia Project: From Clean Energy to Export

May 3, 2026 – The Cabinet approved on Sunday, May 3, an agreement with the Jordan Green Ammonia Company for the production of green ammonia. This agreement represents a significant step forward in introducing the Kingdom to the green hydrogen sector, in partnership with international developers and investors specializing in this field.

The project involves developing an integrated industrial facility for the production of green ammonia, relying on solar energy and energy storage systems to produce green hydrogen, operating on a grid-independent model.

The project reflects the impact of the legislative framework development in the electricity sector. The new electricity law has enabled the implementation of renewable energy projects operating on a grid-independent basis, thus enhancing the attractiveness of investment in advanced energy projects.

The project’s capital cost is estimated at approximately $1 billion. This agreement is a crucial step towards enabling the project company to achieve the anticipated financial closure in September 2027, paving the way for the implementation phase, with commercial operation scheduled to begin in November 2030.

The project strengthens Aqaba’s position as a regional hub for green industries and energy, leveraging its strategic location and existing logistical infrastructure. This will support the development of similar projects and enhance Aqaba’s role as a gateway for exporting clean energy products.

The project will enable the production of approximately 100,000 tons of green ammonia annually, boosting the Kingdom’s capacity to expand its exports of low-carbon products to global markets.

The project will contribute to the development of industries based on green ammonia and its derivatives, transferring advanced knowledge and technology to the Kingdom, and supporting efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transition towards clean energy.
