Major Hydrogen Investment in South Yorkshire: 400+ Jobs & Europe's Largest Electrolyser Factory - News and Statistics

According to a government announcement, a significant hydrogen technology project is set to create more than 400 new jobs in South Yorkshire. The initiative involves a technology that utilizes electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Great British Energy, a publicly owned energy company, alongside the government, is investing a combined sum of £86.5 million in what is described as a UK-first hydrogen project for the region. This represents the largest investment made by Great British Energy in domestic clean power to date. Specifically, ITM Power UK Ltd in South Yorkshire has received a £40 million investment from Great British Energy and a £46.5 million government grant in principle to support a major expansion of its manufacturing operations.

The investment is intended to fund a 1GW expansion of ITM’s facility in South Yorkshire, which will manufacture electrolysers. These devices are described as vital for generating green hydrogen at scale. The funds will accelerate the delivery of ITM’s next-generation electrolyser technology, known as Chronos, which has the potential to reduce costs and improve energy efficiency. The expansion is expected to establish the region as the location of Europe’s largest electrolyser factories.

Officials stated that the investment strengthens UK electrolyser manufacturing and supports the country’s industrial strategy, with opportunities to reduce emissions in key industrial sectors and decrease reliance on fossil fuel markets. The government recognizes hydrogen as a key clean energy industry for national energy security. This combined investment is separate from a previously confirmed £500 million commitment for hydrogen infrastructure.

The government’s grant remains in principle and is subject to review. The investment from Great British Energy originates from a £1 billion programme announced the previous December, designed to support UK-based clean energy supply chains. As a result of this investment, Great British Energy will become a shareholder in ITM Power.
