SEFA Launches New Call for Proposals to Advance Green Hydrogen Across Africa

This programme is open to private sector entities and is designed to support projects that can drive Africa’s transition to sustainable energy and foster socio-economic growth.

Funding Details and Application Process

Backed by initial capital from the German government and approved at the end of 2025, the Green Hydrogen Programme will provide pre-investment financing of up to $20 million. This funding will be allocated to three to five top-ranked projects, selected through a competitive Call for Proposals and subject to rigorous due diligence.

Financing will typically be offered as reimbursable grants, supporting advisory services such as feasibility studies, engineering design, procurement preparation, construction planning, and transaction advisory services. These activities are crucial for advancing projects towards the Final Investment Decision (FID) and financial close stages.

Strategic Importance of Green Hydrogen for Africa

“Green hydrogen represents a real opportunity for Africa, both to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries and to build new value chains, while contributing to socio-economic development,” said Dr Daniel Schroth, Director of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Department at AfDB. “The SEFA Green Hydrogen Programme is designed to contribute to the transition of projects from development to bankability, considering the rigour that is required in supporting an emerging sector.”

Green hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a key solution for decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy industry and transport. By investing in this emerging sector, Africa can position itself as a global leader in sustainable energy, create new jobs, and stimulate economic development.
