India has commissioned around 8,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen production capacity under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) till February 2026, marking a steady ramp-up towards its ambitious target of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) per annum by 2030.
Funding under the mission has been gradually ramped up, with INR 100 crore allocated in FY24 (utilisation INR 0.11 crore), INR 300 crore in FY25 (utilisation INR 46.26 crore), and INR 300 crore in FY26 (utilisation INR 203.75 crore as of March 19, 2026), Minister of State for Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, shared in the Rajya Sabha.
Green hydrogen costs discovered through competitive bidding currently stand at INR 397/kg (including 18 percent GST) for supply to Indian Oil Corporation refineries, and INR 387/kg for Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum refineries, stated MNRE.
According to the World Bank’s “Electrolysers for Hydrogen Production” report, renewable energy sources (solar and wind) contribute approximately 50-70 percent (around INR 235/kg) to the overall production cost.
The government’s strategic push through the NGHM includes competitive bidding, large-scale renewable integration, and downstream refinery tie-ups, aiming to accelerate both domestic adoption and global competitiveness in green hydrogen.
