The inspection organisation joins France’s Bureau Veritas, Belgium’s Vinçotte, Germany’s TÜV SÜD and TÜV Rheinland, and Spain’s SGS as one of six companies accredited to conduct audits for official EU validation.
These bodies can award producers a CertifHy EU RFNBO certificate validating their hydrogen as green.
Dekra is a member of the Spanish Hydrogen Association and, in a statement, highlighted the importance of RFNBO certification in Spain as the country looks to strengthen its position as a hydrogen supplier in Europe.
The firm uses numerous Spanish facilities to provide testing, evaluation, and certification services.
To access subsidies and comply with mandatory targets under programmes such as the Renewable Energy Directive III, green hydrogen produced and sold in the EU must qualify as RFNBO.
Criteria for qualifications include using new renewable energy resources in the same grid zone as the point of production, and achieving a reduction of at least 70% compared to fossil fuels.
Matthieu Boisson, CEO of CertifHy, said that adding recognised certification bodies is essential as the hydrogen sector enters an implementation phase, enabling economic operations to demonstrate compliance critical for market confidence.
In September, CertifHy added Bureau Veritas to the consortium of bodies accredited to certify RFNBOs.
The RFNBO Delegated Acts were adopted in 2023 after extended delays and lobbying, but member states and industry players have since called for clarification or revision, citing market uncertainty.
