India sets green hydrogen-based ammonia emissions limits

It revealed the definition encompassing ammonia produced with renewable energy processed through the grid or banked in storage systems.

An upper limit for non-biogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from production is set at 0.38kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kg of ammonia.

The production process is taken as including green hydrogen production, ammonia cracking, purification, and on-site storage.

GHG emissions are to be measured as an average over a 12-month period.

The benchmark is technically stringent, exceeding even the EU’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin limit of 3.38kg CO2e per kg of hydrogen, equating to an emissions limit around 0.6kg CO2e per kg of green ammonia.

This comes more than two years after MNRE released its definition for green hydrogen, which allows for 2kg of CO2e per kg of hydrogen.

The announcement exempts ammonia solicited before its release date – February 27 – while suggesting parties involved may align products where feasible.

The new standard could help Indian producers to align with Europe’s strict import requirements for renewable fuels.

This comes as India increasingly garners attention for becoming a prominent green ammonia supplier. The nation has widely announced its intentions to become a global green hydrogen production hub, aiming to produce five million tonnes per year by 2030.

In January, it was revealed that German firm Uniper would offtake up to 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year produced at AM Green Ammonia’s 1.3GW project in Kakinada.
