Spain's First Off-Grid Solar Hydrogen Project for Gas Pipeline Blending - News and Statistics

An agreement was signed at the European Hydrogen Energy Conference between H2Pro and Doral Hydrogen to co-develop a solar-powered hydrogen production project in Extremadura, Spain, according to Chemical Engineering Online. The initiative is anticipated to be the first to generate hydrogen solely from off-grid solar power for blending into an existing natural gas pipeline operated by Enagas.

The project will start with a 5 MW Decoupled Water Electrolysis electrolyzer directly connected to 10 MWp of solar generation. Later phases are planned to expand the facility to 50 MW of electrolysis and up to 80 MWp of solar capacity. The system is designed to function fully off-grid, powered entirely by solar energy.

The Decoupled Water Electrolysis technology separates hydrogen and oxygen production in time, which is said to enable flexible operation. This approach allows the system to be turned on and off repeatedly without the degradation associated with conventional electrolysis and to operate efficiently across a wide load range, making it suited for volatile energy inputs like solar or wind.

From a development perspective, the ability to produce green hydrogen without grid electricity is seen as a significant step. It can simplify project design and reduce the need for batteries or grid backup, potentially improving project economics. Doral Hydrogen is reportedly developing 1 GW of green hydrogen projects globally, with a focus on Iberia.

The location in Extremadura is considered strategic due to its high solar irradiation and favorable conditions for large-scale renewable projects. Spain is viewed as a key region for renewable hydrogen development in Europe, benefiting from strong renewable resources and supportive policies.

Initially, hydrogen from the facility will be blended into the Spanish gas network. At a later stage, the produced hydrogen is expected to be injected directly into the planned H2Med hydrogen backbone, which will run through the location. Hydrogen is increasingly regarded as important for energy resilience and for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors.
